Andreas Gehrke’s “Tokyo Test Run” is a preliminary exploration of Tokyo’s architecture and urban spaces. Rather than presenting a grand portrait of the city, it offers a series of refined observations: fragments of façades, layers of light and transitions between interior and exterior spaces. Gehrke traces outlines, edges and surfaces, revealing a unique architectural atmosphere rather than providing mere geographical orientation.
The title “Test Run” implies a trial procedure – a tentative survey of Tokyo to which Gehrke hopes to return to and expand. In its reduced form, the book recalls traditions of the Japanese photobook, in which the joy of mindful perception and the openness of the gaze are more important than a definite commentary. The limited edition consists of 150 copies.
