Berlin and Brandenburg, together the two publications complete and complement one another. Now they appear in a limited double edition in a slipcase with two exclusive prints from both series.
In Berlin, a portrait of a city many of us thought we already knew, Gehrke's photographs lay bare the radical upheavals, discords and new beginnings that have shaped Germany’s capital so uniquely. No less riddled with commonplaces is the sparsely populated surrounding region, which he approaches in the previous publication Brandenburg. Here he also finds an extraordinarily intimate way to reveal the aesthetic dimension of a landscape often described as bleak, austere, and unforgiving. Both long-term projects, on which Gehrke worked over the course of a decade, resist pure documentary photography to draw attention to the structural and social changes by means of subtle allusions. Conceived as a double volume, they are linked by a common view through which the supposed contrasts of city and countryside, loud and quiet, hectic and calm, a sea of houses and lake landscapes are no longer opposites.
